Top Overlooked Considerations in Commercial Security

Commercial security is serious, and seriously complex. There are so many facets impacting the choices that business owners make concerning it. Those considerations and decisions will ultimately impact how well-fit the system will be and its effectiveness.

When considering the need for and extent of commercial security, some aspects come to mind immediately, while other aspects are not so obvious. Today, we’ll consider the less obvious but equally important considerations.

Defining Your Requirements
One of the first and most important things for any commercial business is to determine to what extent your areas of concern will be secured. Security is most effective when it is in layers as no one mode of security is without fail or without its weak point.

Determine Your Threats
What are the threats your business faces? Is it theft, vandalism, or terrorism? Determine all of the possible threats specifically. When you know them, you can protect against them appropriately.

What Are Your Vulnerabilities Against the Threats?
Most people think of vulnerabilities as being static. For example, a hole in a fence is a security problem. How large that problem is depends on what the fence was protecting, and the intent of the one breaking through the perimeter. Your vulnerabilities against threats are determined by the nature and level of the threat and the value of what is being protected.

What is the Value of Your Assets?
In some cases it is easy to determine the value of assets because the value is set. In other cases, it is not easy, such as in protecting people. Your level of security should match the level of value of what you are trying to protect.

What Would Be the Impact of Failure?
Another often overlooked consideration is the impact of failure. If a company opts into minimal security that decision may bring peace of mind and some level of security but if that fails, what would be the ultimate impact. Would it be loss of product, damaged facilities, or lost production time for example? What would that ultimate cost be?

Making decisions about commercial security takes looking at the whole picture. If you have any questions about determining your real security needs, please give us a call today!
