The Transition From 3G To LTE/5G Is Upon Us

The Transition From 3G To LTE/5G Is Upon Us | Are You Ready?

The current transition to the LTE (Long Term Evolution) and 5G involves the retirement of 3G services, with 4G not far behind. 3G and 4G technology have been the foundation of communications for most intrusion and fire alarm systems that rely on wireless communicators. Business owners and homeowners should begin preparing for the sunset now by upgrading from 3G/4G to LTE alarm communicators. ProNet Security Solutions is prepared to help. Here’s what you need to know:

LTE/5G: The Industry Standard

Leading service providers such as Verizon and AT&T have endorsed  LTE as the way of the future. LTE alarm communicators are the industry standard for wireless data transmission and are a drastic improvement over older technologies like 3G and 4G they’re capable of providing:

  • Higher bandwidth (the ability to access more data more quickly)
  • Low data transfer latency (the ability to access data in less time)
  • Enhanced scalability (increases the number of alarm devices connected to an access point at a time)

Narrowing down the sunset dates isn’t an easy task—different network service providers are using varying timelines for the transition that flip-flop depending on several factors. For example, AT&T has already eliminated 3G hardware on strategically located towers across the country. As a result, signal quality and allocated bandwidth will be impacted in the months leading up to the sunset.

How Will The 3G Sunset Effect My Alarms?

Many security integrators, including ProNet, currently monitor alarm systems that utilize 3G communicators. As transmitters are decommissioned and eliminated, the alarm system’s 3G communicators will partially or entirely fail to communicate with their monitoring stations, leaving buildings, homes, and facilities unprotected with faulty alarms. Their current 3G communicators will need to be replaced with LTE/5G communicators in order to maintain their functionality..

ProNet Is Here To Help

As 3G technology is phased out, customers who want to prepare for the long-term will need to upgrade to an LTE communicator—this may include upgrading your existing alarm panel(s). ProNet has been monitoring the 3G Sunset for years, so we’re prepared to assist you by offering information about your current systems and installation options for new solutions during this transition.
